Do I need social media to grow my blog?

I’ve always been into being a blogger, right since I started. It quickly became one of my favourite ways to express myself. As a teenager I was the kid who didn’t use social media, I didn’t see the point. But I guess the same way that everyone else was into social media was the same way that I was into blogging.

However, I ended up creating a twitter account for my blog a few years back in the hopes of gaining a wider group of readers outside of wordpress.com. Around a year or so later I created an Instagram account for the same reasons.

Using social media has given me spaces to promote my blog to more people but also connect with more bloggers, attend events and meet bloggers face to face.

But I’ve been wondering how important these things are because in turn I don’t blog as much as I used to. To add to it all I’m not even good at social media.

A while ago I read a post on Seth Godins blog about how there are things that we do that don’t contribute to our actual work, they more often than not take away from it.

I started using Twitter and Instagram as ways to help expand my readership but the more prominent effect of my social media use has been me consuming large amounts of other peoples words and pictures without contributing much myself.

I can’t help but find myself conflicted as I’ve started to wonder whether I would still be able to grow my blog without such constant use of social media. I did it in the past before I had a blog that was self-hosted but around 80% of my views came from fellow WordPress bloggers.

Since going self-hosted I’ve struggled with growth and promoting my blog posts is the only way for me to get my numbers up. So, I share my posts on Twitter because I want people to read what I’ve written, I don’t want to write a blog that nobody reads.

But I have to admit, I’d love to get my blog to a place where I didn’t have to constantly promote and re-promote my content in the hopes that someone will click the link.

I guess in this this post I’ve answered my own question. The answer is ‘Yes!’ right now I do need social media to grow my blog, but I look forward to the time that I need it a little less.

How much has social media contributed to the growth of your blog?

    1. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I’m going to have to get used to promoting my content I guess but I’m going to try and focus less on the numbers 🙂
